Crowns Q & A

What is a crown?

A crown is a restorative dental device that covers a damaged tooth. It can improve the appearance of your tooth and make it stronger.

Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including ceramic, resin, porcelain, and even stainless steel. For cosmetic reasons, most crowns are tooth-colored porcelain or ceramic.

Why would I need a crown?

Crowns are useful when you have a tooth with a large filling, but there’s not enough of your natural tooth to hold it securely. You may also need a crown if you require a bridge, but the surrounding teeth aren’t strong enough to support it.

If you have badly discolored or misshapen teeth, Dr. Bader may use a crown to cover it.

What happens during a crown placement?

You need two visits with Dr. Bader to successfully place a dental crown.

During your first visit, Dr. Bader makes an impression of your teeth. This is the mold the dental lab uses to custom-make a crown. While you're waiting for the permanent crown, Dr. Bader installs a temporary one until your next visit.

During your second visit, Dr. Bader removes the temporary crown and prepares your tooth. That involves removing a surface layer and shaping your tooth to fit the crown, then positioning the new crown to ensure a good fit. Using a special dental adhesive, Dr. Bader attaches the new crown and seals it into place.

Will getting a crown hurt?

Dr. Bader ensures your comfort throughout the procedure by administering a local anesthetic before preparing your tooth. The process shouldn’t feel much different than getting a filling.

Does the crown work like a regular tooth?

Once Dr. Bader permanently places your crown, it will look and act like a real tooth. The dental lab shades the tooth to match your tooth color, and it won’t look much different than your natural teeth.

Following the procedure, you may need a few days to get used to the feel of the new crown. Otherwise, you care for your crown just as you would your other teeth, with regular brushing and flossing. With proper care, your crown should last for many years.
