Inside your tooth, you have soft tissue known as pulp that houses the blood vessels and nerves, providing nourishment for your tooth. An infection can occur in the pulp if you have a:
These conditions can create infection in the root of your tooth. You may experience mild to severe pain and swelling in the affected tooth.
If left untreated, an abscess can cause permanent tooth loss. And in some cases, an infected tooth can even be life-threatening. So, the earlier you receive treatment, the better off you’ll be.
If you have a tooth infection, Dr. Bader recommends getting a root canal so you can save your natural tooth. He uses root canals to repair severely decayed or abscessed teeth by removing your tooth’s damaged pulp.
Although root canals have a bad reputation, modern dental technology has made them painless. Besides, they’re far more preferable than going through a tooth extraction.
To perform the root canal, Dr. Bader creates an opening in the top of the affected tooth and removes the nerve. He might also apply a bacteria-killing medication inside the tooth before protecting it with a rubber seal.
Dr. Bader puts in a temporary filling to close the hole. He can also suggest other restorative services, including a permanent filling or a crown, for added tooth protection.
To keep you comfortable during the procedure, Dr. Bader administers a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area.
If you have an abscess, Dr. Bader may provide you with antibiotics to resolve the infection before performing a root canal. In that event, you will need to take all of the prescribed medicine over the course of a few days before he can perform the root canal.
Besides scheduling a follow-up visit, you may experience increased tooth sensitivity for the first few days. If you have any pain, Dr. Bader recommends using over-the-counter medications to relieve it. He may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.
